I think the original pitch for this movie was her story, but then some executive said, “But wait… This has to be a sequel to ‘300’ because that made money. She insults the god-king with one of my favorite lines in the movie, “You are king because of me! Now sit back on your throne and rule with the safety I provide you.” This movie should have been about her, and I have a sneaking suspicion that it originally was about her. I even like the dynamic she has with Xerxes, whose very appearance makes me laugh. She’s given a backstory and she has a legitimate reason to hate the Greeks. She lights up the screen with a delightfully evil performance, and her character is surprisingly multifaceted. The most interesting parts of the movie involve Artemesia, played with relish by Eva Green. Is it about a small number Athenians fighting a vast number of Persians at sea, Themistocles trying to unite all of Greece, the rise and fall of Xerxes, or Artemisia’s vengeance against Greece? It tries to be all of these stories, and what it ends up with is no real story at all. I don’t think anyone involved in the writing of this movie really knew what story to tell here. Gerard Butler gave a charismatic performance as King Leonidas, and the action was dynamic and often visually stunning.īut this movie doesn’t have that strong, simplistic story.

It’s strength was in the simplicity of its story, of few standing their ground against many. While recognizing many of these flaws, I still manage to enjoy the original movie immensely.

Considering some of Miller’s statements about Islam recently, as well as that “Holy Terror” book, disputing the claims of racism are difficult at this point. They criticized the movie’s overly simplistic characters that did nothing but spew corny macho lines, and some even pointed out some of the racist and homophobic aspects of Miller’s story.

On the other hand, there were many critics who thought the movie felt too much like a video game. The movie, which takes many creative liberties, was a huge financial success and many praised its somewhat innovative style. “300” was based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller, which was very loosely based on the famous Battle of Thermopylae, where (about) 300 Spartans went up against millions (or probably just a lot) of Persian forces. This is surprising since it’s a sequel, or rather a side-quel/sequel, to one of the most ridiculous popular action movies of the previous decade. Adding insult to injury, much of it sucked in a boring way.
